With prices for 1st. Growths in the 2005 vintage expected to reach anything up to £4000 a case, and not being ready to drink for 20 years ,it makes some of the Uvine Auction offers look positively cheap; especially for some of the other "greatest" vintages of the last two centuries. What about a case of Leoville Poyferre 1945, estimated at £4400? A case of Chateau Branair Ducru one of the many lots of the famous 1959 vintage, is estimated at £2100, an absolute snip! And a magnum of Calon Segur from the wonderful 1961 vintage at £600 is true give away. But for those who feel more extravagent, the Petrus from the Greatest vintages is quite dear- the 1945 would set you back £4300 a bottle, 1961 £4100, and the 1982 £2200. But if you are celebrating your 100th birthday there is even a fine condition bottle of Lafite Rothschild 1906 for under £2000. All these rare wines come from private cellars in France, and most of the very old bottles have picture so that the all important condition can be inspected. The auction runs till midday on Friday 5th May, so there is plenty of time over the May Bank holiday to log on and bid, e-bay style, for some of the Worlds most mature great wines, or indeed some of the sub £100 lots of wines that certainly will not need twenty years before they are ready to drink.
