Descrption: The deal, announced Tuesday, will give Lilly full control of the erectile dysfunction pill for men. Since it went on the market in 2003, Cialis has generated nearly $1 billion in yearly sales that Lilly and Icos now split. The takeover would mean Lilly will keep all the revenue, pumping up its total sales by about 12 percent. Taurel said Lilly will pursue new indications for Cialis but did not specify what they would be. Cialis has captured more than 25 percent of the U.S. erectile-dysfunction market. Worldwide sales of the drug were $456 million in the first six months of 2006. Indianapolis-based Lilly and Icos, a Bothell, Wash., biotech firm, launched Cialis in 2003, the fifth year of their partnership on the drug, whose sales rose 34 percent in the first half of the year to $456 million. The joint venture sells the drug in more than 100 countries, leading the markets in France and Brazil and holding about a 25 percent share in the United States, the companies said. According to a report Friday in the Wall Street Journal, the $2.1 billion that Lilly is paying to acquire Icos may seem hefty, but the price tag could prove worthwhile if potential new uses for Cialis are borne out. Study done last year showed Cialis has promise in treating men with benign prostate hyperplasia, a condition often affecting patients with erectile dysfunction (ED), the report said. “We view Cialis as best in class and estimate Cialis sales could potentially exceed $1.5 billion in 2010," the analyst said. Cialis has fared somewhat better, with sales of $456 million in the first half of last year. This summer, analysts started viewing the drug more favorably as prescriptions for it rose more than 20%. Now, Cialis is expected to hit $1 billion in annual sales, next year, according to Lilly. For more information on cialis treatment options, please visit http://www.sexualhealthnet.info/cialis.html. |
