Descrption: Informing, assisting the disability world James Webb, www.NotAccessible.com’s electronics chief, founded the Web site as a way to help his late wife, Lynne, who had Multiple Sclerosis for many years.
“Originally, I wanted to help people with MS have more social and economic accessibility,” Webb recalls. “Then, Lynne and I discussed it and I decided to include as many disabilities and disorders as I could enumerate. On the FYI section of the site, www.NotAccessible.com identifies and describes as many disorders and their affiliated organizations and associations as possible.”
Webb drew on years of experience with Web sites.
“Our goal at notaccessible.com is to help everyone obtain access to public facilities, regardless of physical limitations. Our feature writer, Herb Drill, is a former assistant financial editor of the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin and Philadelphia Inquirer. Now, he writes for disability-related publications from his perspective as a disabled person. We have provided a place to express frustrations (Have a Beef); compliment someone or some facility that has made life a little easier (Compliment); post a message in our guest book or on our general bulletin board; share a story about your experiences (Viewer Stories), and maybe help someone in a similar situation. We have a chat room set up to operate at scheduled times, and current news on health issues. Also, we have an R&R page to read and/or post funny stories, jokes, etc., and news concerning the Americans with Disabilities Act.”
Webb adds, “We always encourage input to make our site better and welcome ideas. If someone wants to share a prayer that helps them through difficult times, or feel the need for a few extra prayers, they can visit Your Prayers. We have a section titled Helpful Tips if someone found a product, idea, or service that has made life a little better. Then, there are FDA recalls, withdrawals and alerts.”
The Webbs met Herb Drill and his wife at a concert performed by folk-singing legends Peter, Paul & Mary. The two couples became friends and Herb Drill, a career journalist for newspapers and magazines, began writing and editing brief health-are items and contributed Herb’s Report. Drill, with congenital Muscular Dystrophy and other difficulties (Barbara is post-polo), began attending the annual World Congress on Disabilities and writes reports on many of the WCD’s sessions. Those reports have highlighted notable and knowledgeable people involved with helping the disability community nationally and internationally.
Among those people are Jim Kelly, Hall of Fame quarterback and founder - with his wife, Jill - of Hunter’s Hope Foundation; Tim Shriver, CEO of Special Olympics, and Rep. John Murtha.
The site is sponsored by Enable Plus Inc., Jacksonville, Florida-based home care and companionship agency (License No. 229102). |
