Descrption: Since August 4, Meka Johnson’s mother has been in the ICU unit at Ben Taub hospital located in Houston, Texas. When she was admitted, she was alert and talking. After being moved from one bed to another, her mother has not talked since and is on her death bed. The hospital staff is not helpful and is unconcerned with the patients care. The nurses and doctor claim that they don’t know what is wrong with the patient and her case is a rare one. When questioned by the family to move their mom or to call in other doctors, the staff quickly responded that they were specialists with the head and spine and do not need any doctors called in because it isn’t a medical problem. Doctor calls family wanting to meet with them about the patients care but as of this day, they still haven’t met with the doctor. The family was told the doctor is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week working the ER and critical care unit.
The family is very discouraged. If tests are being ran and showing signs that she is okay, then why come attention isn’t being brought on other parts of her body and her visual appearance shows no sign of improvement. This is a patient with Type 2 diabetes, anemia, past cancer surgery, legally blind and has heart trouble. The facility will not call in other specialists to tests or focus on other parts of her body. It seems as if they are unconcerned and waiting for her to die. Since August the patient is full of fluid to the point where her fingers look like sausages. Nurses told the family September 4, 2004 that since their mother was so fat, they couldn’t turn her. This patient doesn’t even weigh 300 pounds but is being discriminated against because of her weight. This is unethical. In a month, laying on her back and no one is keeping her clean or turning her on a regular basis. Patient’s son saw bed sores on his mom September 4, 2004. She has fungus on her underarms, crotch, thighs and stomach from bed sores and funguses from the poor care she is getting. The patients skin is raw from neglect. Just imagine what condition her backside is in. They are in desperate need. Their mother has insurance.
The family noticed a hole in the patient’s neck and was told it was a fungus. Could this be due to the fact that the patient is being neglected? Nurses said that there was no way to relieve the fluid from the patients body. Patients toe was bleeding and doctors do not know why. Blood is leaving the patients body and doctors don’t know why. Their response is they don’t know why when asked questions by family. Patient is alert when family visits and even came to tears and was crying when family visited her yesterday. Patient can respond back when asked to squeeze someone’s hand. Patient moves her mouth and tries to talk and vocalize words. Its as if she wants to say something, trying to reach out for someone to help her.
Patient is located at 4NIC bed 2 and her name is Virginia Lee Johnson. The family is in disbelief that you can get treated this inhumanely in the United States of America. Please help this family get help for their mom. Something needs to be done to look into the practices at this Houston,TX hospital immediately.
